When your digital product is more than five files

Etsy's own wording is plain enough: "You can upload up to five digital files. The maximum size for each file is 20MB." What it doesn't say is what to do when your product is a forty-page planner set, a font family, or a bundle you've built precisely because bundles sell better than single items.

The three real options

Two limits people hit without noticing

• Your file names are what the buyer sees. Etsy says so plainly: "The file names you see will be the same ones your buyers see. We don't have a way of editing the name after uploading, so be sure to name your files appropriately first." A file called `final_v3_USE THIS ONE.pdf` arrives with that name on it. Rename before uploading, not after — there is no after.
• Names are limited to 70 characters, and only letters, numbers, full stops, underscores and hyphens. A descriptive name with a comma or an ampersand in it will be refused.
• The 20MB ceiling is per file, not per listing — so five files is up to 100MB in total, which is more headroom than people assume. The file size page has what actually pushes a PDF over 20MB and how to get it back under.

If you go the link route

The failure mode moves rather than disappearing. A ZIP fails at the buyer's end, where you can see the message; a link fails silently, months later, when you rename a Drive folder or a Canva design gets rebuilt — and the first you hear of it is a review. That's a real trade, not a free upgrade, and it's worth going in knowing which of the two you'd rather deal with.
