Your Figma template link, and why a buyer can't just "use" it
Resume templates, planner UIs and bio-link pages built in Figma sell on Etsy, and Figma's copy-to-your-account step can trip up buyers who've never opened the app before.
Check your delivery link now, free
Paste the Google Drive, Dropbox, Canva or other link you give buyers. We open it from outside your account, the way a buyer would, and tell you what they’ll see. No sign-up.
Resume templates, Notion-style planner UIs, link-in-bio pages and small UI kits are sold on Etsy as Figma files rather than Canva designs. You deliver a Community share link inside the PDF Etsy sends out. It opens fine for you — you're signed in, and it's your file. A buyer who has never opened Figma before gets a page that looks like a design tool rather than a document, with no obvious "download" anywhere on it.
What "opening" a Figma template is actually supposed to do
There's no PDF or image file to download at the end of this — a Figma template is the Figma file itself, kept open and editable in a browser or the desktop app. The buyer's goal isn't to download anything; it's to get their own independent copy they can edit without touching yours.
The free Figma account is the step that trips people up
A buyer who's never used Figma doesn't know they need an account until the page asks for one — and "needs an account" reads as "this is broken" rather than "this is the next step", especially for someone who bought a one-page resume template, not design software.
| What the buyer says | What's actually happening | What to tell them |
|---|---|---|
| "It wants me to sign up just to look at it" | Figma's help centre describes public sharing (the "Anyone with the link" access setting) as a way to share with people "who don't have a Figma account", so viewing alone shouldn't need one. Getting their own editable copy does: "You need a Figma account to duplicate Community files." | "Figma's free to sign up, and you'll need an account either way to get your own editable copy — it's the same step either early or late." |
| "I don't see a download button anywhere" | There isn't one. On a Community page the action is Open in Figma, then choosing which account to add it to. On a shared file link it's the file menu's Duplicate (shown as Duplicate to drafts with view-only access). Neither is a download. | "There's no download: click Open in Figma and pick your account. That adds your own copy to your Figma drafts, which you edit from there." |
| "I made a copy, but now I can't find my edits later" | The duplicate lives in the buyer's Drafts folder in their own Figma account, not anywhere connected to your file. | "It's saved to your Figma Drafts: open Drafts in Figma's file browser, or search for the template's name." |
What to put in the listing and the delivery PDF
- 1
Say it's Figma, and say a free account is needed
Naming the tool and the account requirement up front turns the sign-up prompt from a surprise into an expected step.
- 2
Spell out the exact button, not just "click the link"
For a Community link, that's Open in Figma. For a shared file link, it's Duplicate (or Duplicate to drafts) in the file menu, and check you haven't restricted view-only people from copying: Figma says that if those options are missing, "someone with can edit access to the file has restricted people with can view access from copying or exporting the file's contents."
- 3
Say where the copy ends up
"Your Drafts folder" is the one sentence that saves a buyer from assuming the duplicate vanished because it isn't sitting next to the link they clicked.
- 4
Test the link signed out, in a private window, before you upload the PDF
The same check every guide on this site makes for every platform — your own signed-in view as the file's owner is never what a stranger with the link sees.
The structural fix is the same one that applies whatever the destination is: put a link you control in the delivery PDF, not the raw figma.com URL. How to deliver digital downloads on Etsy covers why that matters even once the link is working correctly — if you ever rebuild the template, you repoint one link instead of hoping every past buyer still has a working one.
